Maternal and Fetal Monitoring Appointments
These appointments, lasting between 60 and 90 minutes, provide a dedicated space for you and your family to be heard, to ask questions, and to share any concerns or experiences related to pregnancy.
During the consultations, we will monitor the baby’s heartbeat, position, and growth, and address any physical discomforts or questions that may arise throughout pregnancy.
It is recommended to schedule one appointment per month, with increased monitoring during the third trimester.
Each consultation lasts between 60 and 90 minutes and includes:
Assessment of maternal and fetal well-being and review of diagnostic test results;
Early identification of situations that may divert the pregnancy from its normal course;
Identification of risk factors and promotion of health education;
Preparation for childbirth and parenthood;
Information regarding parental rights and responsibilities.
Recommended Schedule:
First consultation: ideally before 12 weeks of gestation;
Up to 30 weeks: consultations every 4 to 6 weeks;
From 30 to 36 weeks: consultations every 2 to 3 weeks;
After 36 weeks: consultations every 1 to 2 weeks.
After 40 weeks: recommended ultrasound and CTG at 41 weeks/ intensified prenatal care
Birth Preparation
Each family has unique and diverse needs. You may wish to attend our comprehensive childbirth preparation course or simply seek clarification on specific questions. During the prenatal consultations, there is time to support you in exploring your questions, inform you about common procedures and help prepare you emotionally and physically for your labour.
Topics may include:
Physiology of childbirth: hormonal processes throughout the stages of labor;
Holistic phases of birth;
Mental and emotional preparation for childbirth;
Preparation of siblings for the arrival of a new family member;
Role of the birth partner and application of comfort measures;
Birth vision and birth plan: hospital or home setting;
Choice of place of birth;
Preparation for water birth;
Evidence-based information on childbirth practices;
The fourth trimester: breastfeeding, changes in family dynamics, newborn care, nutritional guidance, and more.
Pregnancy loss support
In the event of a pregnancy loss—most commonly during the first trimester—we offer compassionate, holistic support throughout this deeply sensitive time. Too often, women and families are left feeling empty, unseen, and alone after such a loss.
We are here to gently support both emotional and physical healing, working in collaboration with our professional herbalist when appropriate. Through personalised nutritional guidance, ongoing supportive care, and meaningful rituals, we help individuals and families move through the grieving process with care, presence, and respect.
Assistance during homebirth
We offer homebirth attendance for low-risk, healthy women, in accordance with current evidence-based guidelines, between 38 and 42 weeks of pregnancy, within a 90-minute radius of Viseu.
During prenatal sessions, we focus on building a relationship rooted in trust, open communication, and shared responsibility. We take time to explore your motivations for homebirth and to discuss the benefits, risks, and available alternatives in depth.
Together with your partner, you will be supported to make informed decisions about your care pathway, choice of care providers, birth plan or birth vision, and the postpartum period. Our commitment is to your well-being and to helping you find the care that best suits your needs—even if that ultimately means supporting you in finding care elsewhere.
If you are unsure whether a home or hospital birth is right for you, or if you are not sure where to begin exploring your options in Portugal, please feel free to schedule a call with us. We would be happy to guide you further.

Postpartum care
The first hours after birth are called the “golden hours” for a reason. They are the baby’s first experience of life in their body, outside the womb, and the parents’ first meeting with their child in the physical world. When no life-saving intervention is needed, this moment wants to remain undisturbed.
As midwives, we are vigilant, yet deeply aware of the importance of not interfering when no medical care is indicated. The mother’s hands are the first to touch the baby. The parents’ voices are the first to be heard. Skin to skin, heart to heart.
We share in your joy quietly, observing from the background. We monitor bleeding and perform initial newborn assessments during the first minutes after birth, using a hands-off approach whenever possible. If intervention becomes necessary—such as with slow respiratory transition or postpartum hemorrhage—we act swiftly and clearly, communicating each step. This is where continuity of care matters most, as these possibilities have already been discussed during your prenatal journey.
During the first 10 days after birth, we offer two to three planned postpartum home visits to assess your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. If you choose to breastfeed and challenges arise, we provide support and, when needed, referrals to a lactation specialist.
Optional postpartum check-ups at 3 and 6 weeks take place in the office, depending on the care plan you have chosen.
After a hospital birth, most hospitals require a stay of 48–72 hours following an uncomplicated birth. Additional postpartum care is then offered through the Centro de Saúde. If you prefer a different approach, you may book postpartum consultations with us, which can include clinical assessment of mother and baby, lactation support, womb and sacral massage, optional rebozo wrapping, and guidance with babywearing.
